雁木通り食べ歩き

Gangi Street Food Trail

2–3 hours (or all day) 6 stops ~2 km All year

The gangi arcades are Takada's most distinctive feature — wooden covered walkways that line the shopping streets, built over centuries to keep life moving through some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan.

This route follows the food. From morning coffee to evening yakitori, every stop is something a local would actually eat. No tourist menus, no English signs — just real food in a real town.

01

喫茶店でモーニング

Morning Coffee at a Local Kissaten

Start slow. Find a kissaten (old-school Japanese cafe) near Honcho. Dark wood, thick coffee, maybe a morning set with toast and a boiled egg. This is how locals start the day.

Local tip: Kissaten coffee is stronger and darker than what you might expect. Ask for "blend" if unsure.
02

和菓子

Wagashi — Traditional Sweets

Takada has several wagashi shops that have been in business for generations. Seasonal sweets made fresh daily — sakura mochi in spring, kuri (chestnut) in autumn. Small, beautiful, and never too sweet.

Local tip: Buy a few to take away. They make perfect afternoon snacks and gifts.
03

雁木通り散策

Gangi Arcade Browsing

Walk the covered wooden arcades. Pop into miso shops, pickle stores, and small grocers. The gangi were built to keep life moving through Joetsu's legendary snowfall — some sections date back centuries.

Local tip: Buy some miso here. Joetsu miso is darker and richer than Tokyo-style. It makes a real difference in cooking.
04

ラーメン

Ramen Lunch

Joetsu has a serious ramen scene. Miso-based is the local specialty — thick, warming, built for cold winters. Queue up with the salarymen and construction workers. That's how you know it's good.

Local tip: Lunchtime (11:30–13:00) is peak. Go at 11:00 to avoid the wait. Ask for "katame" if you prefer firmer noodles.
05

酒蔵・酒店

Sake Shop or Brewery Visit

Joetsu is one of the great sake regions. Several shops along the main street carry exclusively local brands. Some breweries in town offer tastings.

Local tip: Ask for "junmai" (pure rice sake) — it pairs best with local food. "Kubiki" and "Yoneyama" are well-regarded local brands.
06

焼き鳥・居酒屋

Yakitori or Izakaya (If Evening)

If you're doing this route into the evening, finish at a local izakaya. Yakitori, edamame, cold beer. The Takada area has small places tucked into side streets — look for the red lanterns.

Local tip: Most izakaya have picture menus or display food models. Point and order — no Japanese needed.
